Year 1 Components

Term 1 workshops will include:

• Printing techniques; screen printing, transfer & sublimation printing.
• Felting
• Weaving
• Hand and free machine embroidery
• Batik
• Applique
• Garment construction
• Pattern drafting

Term 2 & 3 will include:

During the second and third term students are encouraged to work on independent projects developing skills learnt through the workshops.

Students undertake a mock exam using past papers from AQA. During this time they will look into contemporary and historical Textile Artists and Designers, researching and responding to their work and ideas.

Year 2 Components

Term 1: Students continue to focus on a specialist area within Textile design, (Fashion/Interiors/Fine Art Textiles) exploring and experimenting with media, developing key skills and techniques further to produce a portfolio of work for their practical study (coursework). Alongside the practical work, students will produce a written contextual essay linked to their practical project. Students will work towards final outcomes, which will then be used to take photoshoots within Photography. 

There will be opportunities for educational trips to visit exhibitions and museums in London and East Anglia.

Term 2/3: During February of term 2 the AQA exam paper is released and students start a 10-week investigation into a question of their choice. Their studies into artists and designers help their journey of discovery through textiles, leading to a 15-hour practical exam linked to their exploration of ideas. 

Minimum Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including:

• GCSE grade 5 in Art and/or Textiles
• And GCSE grade 5 in English Language or Literature
• A selection of artwork and sketchbooks, which demonstrates acceptable levels of skill, will be requested for consideration if Art/Textiles not studied at GCSE

Assessment

• 40% Externally set practical exam
• 60% Personal Investigation. Coursework

On the Textile Design course, you will explore, develop, and acquire a wide range of techniques and processes in a range of textile media. You will explore colour, pattern, form and texture through experimentation of materials, gaining knowledge and understanding of traditional and digital textile processes. The emphasis is on individual projects that promote personal interpretation of a specialist area, which shows a depth of study. The course offers a broad opportunity to explore areas of fashion design and illustration, garment construction, printed surface design, constructed textiles and fine art textiles.

It will enhance your understanding of critical approaches to film and how to apply them. Films are studied within their key contexts, including social, political and industrial influences.

You will learn key analytical skills so that you will be able to freely ‘read’ films and be aware of how meaning is generated and how spectators respond to films.

A Level Textile Design gives students the potential to progress onto a creative degree course at university, or an Art Foundation Diploma at College. The skills associated with the course are highly commended by universities.

Future career possibilities may include, but are not exclusive to Costume Design, Exhibition Design, Interiors, Product Design, Jewellery Design, Fashion Designer, Fashion Journalism, Make-up Designer, Merchandising and Management.
