Philosophy A Level

Course Overview

Philosophy offers an intellectually stimulating and thought-provoking exploration into the fundamental questions of human existence, knowledge, ethics and the nature of reality.

Over the two year course you will study a wide range of philosophical theories, concepts and arguments put forward by influential thinkers from Plato to Descartes, Hypatia to Foot and many more in between. You will consider arguments relating to the nature of reality, our ability to perceive it accurately, how we should make moral decision, questions and arguments relating to the existence of God and the problem of evil, and finally an exploration of the philosophy mind. You will also have the chance to apply these theories to practical examples including the question of how we should treat animals, whether robots and AI can ever be considered to be persons. You will also gain experience in developing your own arguments through an evaluation of the philosophers we study.
